Volkswagen presents new electric sedan concept in China

For better or for worse, new EVs from global automakers increasingly seem to be making their debuts in China. That’s where Volkswagen recently chose to present the ID. AERO electric sedan, which the automaker calls a “close-to-production concept car.”

“The future model will be positioned in the premium mid-size sedan segment,” says VW. The production version for China is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2023, and a European version is expected to go into production at VW’s Emden plant in 2023. “As the new flagship model of the ID. family, the ID. AERO will be offered globally in future—also in Europe and North America in addition to China.”

Following the ID.3, ID.4 and ID.6, the ID. AERO will be the fourth fully-electric model series in China.  Two versions are planned, one for each Volkswagen joint venture.

The new EV is equipped with a 77 kWh battery pack, and delivers a range of up to 620 km (WLTP).

The ID. AERO is built on VW’s MEB EV platform, which can be adapted for vehicles of different shapes and sizes. “The MEB can be used across segments,” says VW, “from compact crossover or SUV and minibus through to spacious sedan.”

“With the ID. AERO show car, we are revealing a preview of the next member of the ID. family. A car with a range of over 600 kilometers, an extraordinary amount of space and a premium interior,” says Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars. “Following the ID.4, this model will be our next global car for Europe, China and the US. “
