SAE International launches certification for EV charger repair technicians

Anyone who regularly uses, or attempts to use, public EV chargers will surely agree that there’s a pressing need for EVSE repair technicians.

Standards body SAE International has produced a certification program to verify skills and knowledge of technicians who maintain, repair and operate EV charging stations. The SAE Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) Technician Certification will be granted to technicians who have successfully completed a comprehensive training program and passed a rigorous exam. The certification establishes a Body of Knowledge categorized into seven domains of theoretical and practical components, including tasks such as identifying and diagnosing issues, and repairing or replacing faulty components.

SAE worked with experts from EVSE manufacturers to develop a set of standards and requirements for EVSE techs. The certification is designed to ensure that technicians have a thorough understanding of the electrical, mechanical and communication systems used in EV charging stations.

“We’re excited to release this certification, as it provides new opportunities in well-paying careers, especially for under-represented communities who otherwise would not have access,” said Elizabeth Melville, Director of Learning at SAE International. “The certification will help charging station companies and repair providers verify that their employees have the skills and knowledge required to maintain, repair, and operate EV charging stations.”
