Polestar 4 electric SUV coupe headed for North America in 2024

EV manufacturer Polestar (Nasdaq: PSNY) has added a second SUV to its lineup. The company says the new Polestar 4 is “positioned between Polestar 2 and Polestar 3 in terms of size and price,” and is “the fastest Polestar production car to date.”

Polestar 4 will be offered in dual- and single-motor (rear-wheel drive) versions. Each of the permanent magnet synchronous motors delivers 200 kW (272 hp) of power and 343 Nm (253 lb-ft) of torque. A disconnect clutch allows the dual-motor variant to disengage the front motor when not needed, to maximize efficiency. The 0-60 time is expected to be less than 3.8 seconds.

Both long-range versions feature a 102 kWh battery pack, and the targeted range is over 300 miles (EPA estimate).

Up to 200 kW DC and 22 kW AC charging is included for all versions, and the charge lid is motorized. Bidirectional charging is included. A standard heat pump allows the car to take advantage of ambient heat when preconditioning the cabin and battery.

All Polestar cars feature over-the-air (OTA) updates.

Safety features include 9 airbags, as well as the SuperVision Advanced Driver Assistance System from Mobileye. Some 12 cameras, one radar and 12 ultrasonic sensors are fitted as standard. The optional Pilot Pack includes enhanced Pilot Assist with lane change assistance.

A full lifecycle assessment (LCA), documenting the car’s carbon footprint, will be published alongside the Polestar 4 Product Sustainability Declaration in 2024.

A novel mono-material approach is applied to interior materials—all layers of certain components are produced from the same base material, allowing them to be recycled more efficiently. New interior materials include upholstery made from recycled polyester, and some of the carpets and  trim panels are made from recycled and/or sustainably sourced materials.

Polestar 4 will be launched first in China. Production is to begin at a Geely-owned production facility in Hangzhou Bay in November 2023. Details for the North American market will be presented in 2024, and sales are scheduled to begin later that year. Launch pricing is expected to begin at $60,000.
