New electric vehicle models coming in 2021

ABI Research released their 2021 Trend Report and determined that 2021 will be a pivotal year for EVs. With new electric vehicle adoption policies and bans on internal combustion engines rising around the world, the pressure to develop new EV models is also rising. 

While there are dozens of new EV models that are in the works and delivery dates often shift, below are new EV models that are anticipated to be released this year.

Under $50,000

Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ford is expanding its Mustang line with the Mustang Mach-E, an all-electric crossover. It will start at $42,895 with a range of 211 to 305 miles. It includes the Ford Co-Pilot 360™ Technology with automatic emergency braking, a lane-keeping system, and other features. Estimated release date: August 2021

Jeep Wrangler 4xe

Jeep is entering the plug-in space, proving that you can go off-road in an electric vehicle. This plug-in hybrid, with a starting price of $47,995, will have 50 estimated electric miles and 400 total miles. Estimated release date: Early 2021

Nissan Ariya

Nissan, who pioneered mass-market electric vehicles with the LEAF over a decade ago, is expanding its EV portfolio with the Ariya, an all-electric crossover. The vehicle is expected to have a range of approximately 300 miles and be priced around $40,000. Unlike the LEAF, the Ariya will have a liquid-cooled battery and CCS fast charging capability, rather than CHAdeMO. Estimated release date: Late 2021

Volkswagen ID.4

While Volkswagen previously had the e-Golf, they are looking to make a bigger splash with the new ID.4. Starting at $39,995 with 250 miles of all-electric range, VW plans to offer models with rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. It has a towing capacity of up to 2700 pounds. Estimated release date: Early 2021

$50,000–99,999

Rivian R1S

Rivian is set to deliver it’s long-awaited all-electric SUV and pickup truck this year. The R1S, Rivian’s SUV, will start at $70,000 with an estimated starting all-electric range of 250 miles. The vehicle includes all-wheel drive and has 108 cubic feet of storage. Estimated release date: August 2021

Rivian R1T

Rivian’s other new offering, the R1T, looks to be the first all-electric pickup truck to hit the market, while the Tesla Cybertruck and GMC Hummer EV are still to come. The R1T will start at $67,500 with an estimated starting range of 250 miles. According to Rivian, the truck has 68 cubic feet of storage and can tow more than 11,000 pounds. Estimated release date: June 2021

Volvo XC40 Recharge

While Volvo has had plug-in hybrid offerings, the XC40 Recharge will be the automaker’s first all-electric vehicle. This compact SUV starts at $53,990 with 208 miles of range. Estimated release date: Early 2021

$100,000 and up

Lucid Air

Lucid Motors, based in California, is planning to deliver its first vehicle, the Lucid Air, this summer. This luxury EV has an EPA estimated range of 517 miles and will start at $139,000. It includes a mostly glass cabin roof, front trunk with 10 cubic feet of volume, and a fast charge of 300 miles in 20 minutes. Estimated release date: Summer 2021
