The city of Madrid has confirmed plans to phase out all diesel buses. By January 2023, the Spanish capital’s entire fleet will be made up of electric, natural gas and hybrid buses.
Transit agency Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid (EMT) ordered 30 BYD electric buses last September.
Now EMT has awarded a tender for the purchase of 50 new electric buses, dividing the order between BYD and Spanish manufacturer Irizar. The agency also ordered 520 new CNG buses from Solaris, Scania and Evobus.
The latest e-bus order consists of 30 Irizar ie models and 20 BYD K9UB models. In a separate tender, EMT plans to add another 50 EVs and 6 electric minibuses. The addition of the new electric buses means that 8.6% of the EMT fleet (some 2,100 buses) will be electrified.
