Eaton consolidates commercial and light-duty EV products into new business unit

The Vehicle Group of power management company Eaton has consolidated its EV transmissions, gearing and differentials into a new ePowertrain business unit.

Eaton provides 2-, 4- and 6-speed transmissions for commercial EVs, which enable clutchless shifting through a traction motor. The company says that, in comparison to the direct-drive transmissions common in EVs, its multi-speed transmissions increase efficiency at high speeds, and also raise torque at launch and low speeds.

The company also designs and manufactures gearing for EVs ranging from large-scale batches to niche-market orders. Eaton says its gearing reduces manufacturing costs and is designed to deliver low noise vibration and harshness (NVH) levels.

“Our new ePowertrain business unit can provide our customers with an optimized, integrated EV powertrain, which will help simplify their engineering development process,” said Product Director of EV Gearing and Differentials for Eaton’s Vehicle Group Anthony Cronin. “We will work with our global customers to determine the ideal combination of transmission, gearing and torque solutions that best meet their EV needs.”
