The transition to EVs will require transformation of all the many automotive-related sectors of our economy, and that includes repair shops.
EV Service Pros has launched a new platform designed to connect owners with a growing network of independent repair shops specializing in EV maintenance and service. Founded by Tesla and Rivian alum Xander Walker, this online marketplace is meant to help EV owners find quality local service, empower service providers with tools to improve their businesses, and support training for the next generation of auto repair technicians.
According to EV Service Pros, there are currently over 500,000 out-of-warranty EVs in the US, and that number could grow to 15 million by 2033.
“Service providers often overlook the fact that they are already well-positioned to start working on EVs,” said Walker. “By making moderate investments in equipment and providing EV-specific training to their skilled workforce, independent shops can broaden their customer base and proactively navigate the EV transition.”
The EV Service Pros website allows users to browse certified independent repair shops in their community, each with a detailed profile. Shops are organized into three tiers: Basic shops can perform traditional services like tire rotations, brake, and suspension service; Intermediate shops have undergone EV-specific training and can diagnose and repair EV systems; Advanced shops can perform the most complex services, including high-voltage battery replacement. The tiered system is designed to allow shops to make incremental investments in training and tooling to start to make the transition to the EV economy.
