Thomas Built Buses delivers 200th Proterra Powered electric school bus

Proterra builds and sells transit buses under its own brand, and also provides electric powertrains to other EV manufacturers through its Proterra Powered business unit.

One very popular application is the electric school bus. Thomas Built Buses (TBB), a subsidiary of Daimler Trucks North America, recently delivered its 200th Proterra Powered Saf-T-Liner C2 Jouley battery-electric school bus.

The historic bus went to Monroe County Public Schools in Indiana. This was the sixth delivery of 13 e-buses ordered by the district from Kerlin Bus Sales. The district plans to electrify all 85 of its primary bus routes by 2028, exclusively with Jouley electric buses from TBB.

TBB says its Saf-T-Liner C2 Jouley electric school bus offers the same vehicle quality, durability, performance, safety and comfort as its legacy diesel model. Jouley is equipped with 226 kWh of total energy capacity in a Proterra Powered battery system, a two-speed transmission and an operating range of up to 138 miles. Jouley can charge in approximately three hours using DC  fast charging, and can supply power to the grid using vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology.

TBB and Proterra offer school bus operators a turnkey EV program that includes planning and funding consultation, buses, charging systems, and charging infrastructure design and installation.

“Our district is delighted to have received the 200th Jouley from TBB,” said Dr. Jeff Hauswald, Superintendent for Monroe County Community School Corporation. “Beyond the long-term cost savings benefits, converting our fleet also helps us meet safety and sustainability goals set forth by school administration, reducing CO2 emissions by 27 tons and saving 1,080 gallons of diesel per bus in our fleet.”
